Wardynski Blames Multi-Million Dollar Loss On Fraud, Waste and Abuse

How would you feel if you found a bunch of money, but couldn't spend it?  Huntsville City Schools recently found out it had more than $30 million over the last few years but never seized the opportunity to use it.  The superintendent blames fraud, waste and abuse.

Dr. Casey Wardynski says the school system lost $22-$33 million between 1998 and 2011 in one department alone.

"I believe there was fraud, waste and abuse going on," said Dr. Wardynski. "I'm sure we're going to put an end to this."

Waste came to mind when consultants explained what the district paid to build the new Lee High School. The district is said to have paid nearly $47 million on the new school.  One of the consultants presenting the audit's findings to the school board said the average cost of a new high school is around $23 million.

Dr. Wardynski's suspicions began when he started seven months ago.  Consultants confirmed those concerns in January.

"What they determined was, the district had problems for many years," said Dr. Wardynski.
