Hearing Officer Reverses Huntsville Teacher's Firing, Parents Happy With Decision

WHNT NEWS 19 has learned new details about a teacher who will be getting her job back. Joanne Thompson was fired for missing the first week of class at Davis Hills Middle School to attend a religious conference in Washington, DC. Thompson appealed the decision and won.

Every parent WHNT NEWS 19 talked with outside the school was happy to hear Thompson would be teaching at Davis Hills Middle School again.  One said Thompson shouldn't have been fired in the first place.

Belinda Hill talked with WHNT NEWS 19 minutes after picking up her seventh-grader.

"I honestly feel like it's something that's really uncalled for," said Hill.

Hill says Joanne Thompson taught one of her children. She believes the English teacher should not have been fired.

"If Dr. Wardynski did not like what happened, perhaps he should have reprimanded her because firing was a bit too much," added Hill.

"This is where the students get the chance to learn and get to know that particular teacher, their behavior and all of that stuff just like it is for the teacher to learn the student," added Hill.

She still believes Dr. Wardynski went too far in firing Thompson.
