Two state Senate Republicans seek solution to so-called 'Anchor Babies'

MONTGOMERY - Two Republican state senators, including Paul Sanford of Huntsville, said Tuesday they've joined a national movement to alter the 14th Amendment that grants U.S. citizenship to children of foreign nationals born in the United States.

Sanford and Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale support a revision of the Constitution that would stop what they term "anchor babies."

Neither senator said they favor an outright abolishment of the amendment, but said it should be altered so that children of foreign nationals born in the United States should not automatically become U.S. citizens.
